A Specific Learning Disorder (SLD) is diagnosed when a person has persistent difficulty in a specific academic area — commonly reading (dyslexia), written expression (dysgraphia), or math (dyscalculia) — despite typical intellectual ability and appropriate instruction. Learning disabilities are not a measure of intelligence; many children with learning disorders are bright and capable, but process certain types of information differently.

Why a Comprehensive Evaluation?

Learning difficulties rarely involve just one skill in isolation. Reading, writing, and math all draw on overlapping cognitive systems — including language, working memory, processing speed, and attention — so a narrow screener can miss the full picture, or misattribute the difficulty entirely. Our evaluations include a full cognitive (IQ) battery and academic achievement testing alongside measures of executive functioning, attention, memory, and language, so we can identify not just that a child is struggling, but specifically why — and whether ADHD, anxiety, or another factor is also part of the picture.

What to Expect

  • Clinical Interview

    We discuss your concerns and gather developmental and educational history, including report cards, prior evaluations, and relevant records.

  • Neuropsychological Testing

    Standardized tests assess reading, writing, math, cognitive functioning, executive functioning, attention, memory, processing speed, and language skills.

  • Assessment of Psychological Functioning

    We also screen for conditions that commonly co-occur with learning disorders, including ADHD, anxiety, and depression.

  • Collateral Information

    Teachers or other providers may complete rating scales, and we review available school records to understand how challenges show up in the classroom, not just in one testing session.

  • Feedback Session

    We walk you through the results in plain language and provide a written report with specific recommendations for school accommodations, tutoring, or other supports — including documentation that can be used with schools.
