Preparing Your Younger Child
for a Neuropsychological Evaluation

It's important to prepare your child for the evaluation to help them feel comfortable and at ease.
Here are some different topics you can discuss with your child to help them understand what to expect:

What will they be doing? Explain to your child that during the appointment, they will participate in various activities. Some of these activities will be similar to what they do at school, while others will be new. Reassure them that there is nothing to study for and they should just try their best and work hard.

Examples of Activities:

  • Looking at pictures and talking about them
  • Answering questions
  • Solving puzzles
  • Writing and drawing
  • Arranging blocks into patterns
  • Using a computer or iPad for some tasks

Let them know that activities will change often to keep things interesting.

  • Where will we be? Tell your child that the evaluation will take place at our office building. They can bring a tablet or toy to play with during breaks, but these items will need to stay in the waiting room with their parents while they are working with us. Remind them to bring a water bottle if they like.
  • Who will be there? Inform your child that their parents or caregivers will bring them to the appointment. Initially, the adults will talk with the doctor, and then the child will meet the examiner and start the activities.
  • Taking Breaks: Explain that there will be frequent breaks (every 30-45 minutes) or sooner if needed. During breaks, they can go back to the waiting room with their parents, relax, and have a snack or drink.
  • Encouragement: Reassure your child that it's perfectly okay if they don't know an answer. Encourage them to try their best and let them know that if they don't know something, they can simply say so. Emphasize that the goal is to have fun and feel comfortable throughout the day.

By discussing these topics with your child, you can help them feel more prepared and at ease for their evaluation.
